(Continue to struggle, don’t be afraid!) The procession celebrating International Human Rights Day wound its way through the city of Baguio in the Philippines. Indigenous peoples in their traditional clothing, community organizations with flags and placards, and little boys proudly carrying banners marched through the streets, with crowds of onlookers on either side. Leading the way was the Cordillera (say cor-dee-air-a) Peoples Alliance (CPA) van, its loudspeaker projecting calls for the release of human rights workers who have disappeared under the current regime. While the energy level that day was high, it takes courage for United Church partner CPA to do their ongoing work: calling for justice for the indigenous peoples of the Cordillera region of the Philippines. Over 900 Filipino people have been killed or abducted since 2001, about half for political reasons, some of them active CPA leaders. Thousands more have been affected by mining, dams, and increasing poverty, all tied to globalization. The CPA’s work is strengthened by the knowledge that people around the world support their struggle for human rights, justice, and caring for the earth. We express this support through exchanging resources, welcoming partners to Canada, speaking out for justice with our own government, sending overseas personnel to the Philippines, and giving to the Mission and Service Fund. We are a united church! Together we support struggles for justice in the world. Pray for our overseas partners and their work. © 2009 The United Church of Canada/L’Église Unie du Canada.
