Environmental Awareness
The United Church of Canada is involved in human rights and social justice initiatives. Your Mission and Service Fund gifts support them.
The Mining Working Group in the Maritime Conference is dedicated to raising awareness of the environmental impact of mines. It also defends the human rights of those affected by the mining industry in Canada and worldwide.
The Mining Working Group helped organize a gathering in 2008 in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia, where speakers discussed the unethical practices of Canadian mining companies. For example, Canadian mining companies are in Honduras, which has rich mineral reserves and a business-friendly corporate tax rate, making it very profitable for multinational corporations to do business there. Small royalties are paid to the state and there are fewer ecological regulations than in Canada. The Honduran government, desperate for foreign money, protects foreign interests at the expense of its citizens.
In the production of gold, arsenic and cyanide are leached into the soil and enter the groundwater. Near these mines, people have high levels of heavy-metal contamination, miscarriages are common, cancer is increasing, and some children are so affected by arsenic poisoning that they are too weak to stand. Mining companies refuse to accept responsibility.
The Mining Working Group is committed to calling mining companies to account and to alleviating the suffering of all those affected by Canadian mining interests. Your gift to the Mission and Service Fund helps advocate for justice in the world.
We are a united church! When we give, work, and speak in a united voice more will hear. Give thanks for United Church groups working for social justice.
