Minutes for Mission
Thanks to Farmers
Do you remember Murray McLaughlin’s song about farmers—the
one that refers to straw hats and old handkerchiefs? The song
was a novelty because farmers are usually unsung heroes.
They have faced difficult times over the years.
If it wasn’t the easy credit of the ’70s followed by the high
mortgage rates and bank foreclosures of the ’80s, it was
something else: free trade and cheap imports, foreign subsidies
and competition, increased regulations, and scares like BSE
and swine flu, not to mention changing weather patterns.
Farms themselves are changing. In order to earn enough from
their crops, farmers have to run increasingly large farms. This has
put many small-scale farmers out of business. It also means that those people still farming have less and less time to spend with their families. Add to the mix the cost of fuel and the changing demands for products, and it’s no wonder farmers are under great stress.
Living under all this strain is not easy, and that’s where Queen’s Bush Rural Ministries comes in. Formed in 1987 in Bruce Presbytery, and now jointly funded by Toronto and Hamilton Conferences, Queen’s Bush Rural Ministries attempts to be an advocate for local farmers.
They lend a listening ear when a farmer is feeling stressed. They provide a referral service when someone is having problems with banking and government red tape. They are a friendly support to families in need.
Queen’s Bush Rural Ministries is supported by your gifts to the Mission and Service Fund. Please give generously so that this important ministry can continue.
We are a united church! This week, remember Hamilton Conference
and rural United Church congregations in your prayers.
