United and Welcoming

Canada is home to people of many different cultures from more than 240 countries. The United Church of Canada is committed to becoming an intercultural church, but what does it mean for a church to be intercultural?

Interculturalism means not only recognizing that there are people of different cultures in our church, but also making sure that they are included in all aspects of the church’s life. Intercultural dimensions of ministries will be a priority in seeking racial justice in the life, mission, and practices of the whole church.

It’s a tall order. Some people think interculturalism is only a city issue. Others feel that our church is already welcoming. Still others are unwilling to make changes. But important first steps are being taken toward living out our commitment, and they are supported by the Mission and Service Fund.

In Toronto in 2008, The United Church of Canada hosted its first intercultural conference, Behold! One Another. People from many different congregations, countries, and backgrounds came to worship and learn together—Asian, African, European, North American, South Pacific Islanders, Native, French, gay, lesbian, and deaf. Various languages were used and people learned how to be more culturally aware and inclusive. Hidden minorities and hidden prejudices were discussed. Behold! One Another was an invigorating beginning to learning a new and exciting way to be church.

Your gift to the Mission and Service Fund supports the work of Intercultural Ministries in The United Church of Canada.

We are a united church! This week, ask a blessing on those
who are worshipping in ethnic-minority United Church congregations
across Canada: Korean, Taiwanese, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Hungarian,
and Armenian, to name a few.
