Minutes for Mission
We Are Family
Alana was a single mother attempting to survive on a limited income. When she was faced with a court-imposed fine, she chose to pay it by doing community service at West Broadway Community Ministry (WBCM), near her Winnipeg apartment.
Alana started by preparing lunch for up to 100 guests a day at the drop-in kitchen. She heard stories of the challenges clients faced, challenges she understood personally. She joined the Winnipeg Poverty Advisory Committee and became involved in combatting the unjust treatment experienced by those living in poverty.
She received mentoring training at WBCM and helped individuals and families understand their rights. She also advocated on their behalf for just treatment. Alana has now been hired as a full-time community mentor at WBCM.
Alana describes the community served by WBCM as her family, and says her life has been transformed by her association with them. The care she gives and receives at WBCM has helped free her from drugs and alcohol. Her life has new purpose and meaning, and she is well respected and liked in her community.
West Broadway Community Ministry is supported by the Mission & Service Fund. Your M&S gifts help staff there respond to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of impoverished individuals and families. Please give generously to the Mission & Service Fund so that community ministries can continue to share God’s love in concrete ways.
We are a united church! This week, remember congregations
in the Conference of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario.
Ask for a blessing on the programs and services we support together,
and through which caring communities take shape, people are given
concrete help, and lives are transformed.
