We Are Not Alone
If you’re following the World Development and Relief 2010
calendar,
this story relates to the theme for Lent Week 5: Share More.
Assiniboia is a small town in southern Saskatchewan farm country. Like many small towns in Saskatchewan, it finds its population shrinking as more and more people leave the farms and move to the cities. Despite these factors, St. Paul’s United Church in Assiniboia wanted to find a way to promote the Mission and Service Fund to support exciting ministry locally, in Canada, and around the world. They wanted a project for both young and old to share in the good work of The United Church of Canada.
The project they decided on was selling Easter cards made by the Sunday school children. The children drew Easter designs on the fronts of the cards and printed Easter scripture verses inside. The M&S logo on the backs was a reminder that all proceeds would go to the Mission and Service Fund. The children sold their cards to church members, to friends and family, and at various church events. The cards were very popular, and in the end $320 was donated to the Mission and Service Fund.
Each year a church-wide goal is set for M&S, to support the work of the United Church. The 2010 goal for the Mission and Service Fund is $30.2 million. For each of us alone this goal seems impossible. But we are not alone.
Together we can support ministries all around the world. Please join the kids at St. Paul’s United Church in supporting the Mission and Service Fund—our United Fund for a United Vision.
We are a united church! Today, ask for a blessing on the congregations
and United Church partners in Saskatchewan Conference.
