June 27, 2010                         General Council 101

Have you ever planned a meeting for 400 people? Or an event for 700? That’s what The United Church of Canada does every three years for its General Council meeting. The meeting is an important part of this unique United Church of ours, and it is funded by Mission and Service.

At General Council about 365 commissioners from across the church are joined by volunteer leaders and members of the youth forum, ecumenical guests, observers from other churches, special speakers, and resource people: about 700 people!

The General Council meeting is key to our work. The commissioners make decisions and create policies to shape our denomination for years to come. They decide on human resources policy, rule on petitions from the presbyteries and Conferences, and choose who will be our Moderator for the following three years. They debate social issues, listen to ecumenical guests, take part in worship, and act as the public face of The United Church of Canada.

Although the next meeting isn’t until 2012, planning is already under way. Meeting space in Ottawa must be found and equipment arranged and delivered. Agendas and workbooks are produced. Travel arrangements, accommodations, and menus must be considered. The planning takes many hours of volunteer and staff time, and it’s expensive.

Through the Mission and Service Fund we support the work of the General Council. Your Mission and Service Fund gifts make sure that all parts of the United Church have a voice in the future of our church.

We are a united church! Ask for a blessing on the work and well-being
of the Moderator of The United Church of Canada and on all those who
serve the denomination at the General Council meeting.
