Did you know that about 60,000 Aboriginal people call Toronto their home? Life in the city can be exceedingly difficult for people who have been isolated from their cultural roots, who frequently have difficulty finding employment, and who are often subject to prejudice or rejection. The Toronto Urban Native Ministry offers an invaluable service to them.
The ministry works specifically with people living on the street, people in residential school healing programs, and people in rehabilitation programs for those coming out of prison. The ministry also offers two worship services each week—one on Friday evenings at Metropolitan United Church and the other on Sundays at Council Fire Native Cultural Centre, an Aboriginal social services agency where the ministry offices are located. The Rev. Allan Sinclair is a United Church minister who, along with an Anglican colleague, provides pastoral support for the ministry.
Exciting things are taking place in the community where the ministry office is located, with the redevelopment of both the Regent Park neighbourhood and the First Nations Public School. Toronto Urban Native Ministry is forming an Aboriginal congregation and exploring ways to help other congregations be more welcoming of people who practise and are interested in Aboriginal spirituality.
This essential work is supported by your gifts to the Mission and Service Fund.
We are a united church! This week, hold in your thoughts the
United Church theological training centres for First Nations peoples,
the First Nations presbyteries, the All Native Circle Conference, our
Aboriginal congregations across the church, and the ongoing work
of the Residential Schools Steering Committee.
