Please forward items for Church News to Darryl Butt by Thursday of each week Silently Speaking Hands move quickly, almost flying through the air. They move in anger, compassion, frustration, and love. Expressions on faces tell a thousand stories. Laughter follows an inaudible joke. This conversation takes place in American Sign Language (ASL), the language of the deaf and hard of hearing. The deaf are often a hidden minority, recognized only when we see sign language, or when we realize someone hasn’t heard us. Most hearing people consider deafness a disability, but for the deaf community, it is the mark of their culture. Participants at the Behold! One Another conference on becoming an intercultural church, which was supported by the Mission and Service Fund, learned what deafness actually means to deaf people in their faith community. To be truly inclusive, a church must include both deaf and hearing people in its ministry all week long. Helen Bickle knows this reality well. As a deaf person, she grew up isolated from other deaf people, trying to adapt to living in a hearing world. When she had a deaf child of her own, she began to explore deaf culture and found that she wasn’t alone. In her work with St. Matthew’s Deaf Ministry in Belleville, Helen helps others find a welcoming sanctuary in which to share their faith. Through your gifts to the Mission and Service Fund we help fund intercultural ministries and programs. We also support the work of Deaf Ministries in Belleville, Halifax, St. John’s, Toronto, and Winnipeg. We are a united church! Let’s give thanks today for the many diverse ministries of The United Church of Canada. © 2008 The United Church of Canada/L’Église Unie du Canada.
