Called to Live beyond Security
In June 2009 about 150 people gathered in Toronto at the North American Stewardship Conference (NASC) to listen, learn, and discuss ways to move their lives and their churches’ lives beyond security. To live beyond security we have to recognize the many illusions we have about guaranteeing safety.
Weapons, walls, and other ways to shut out people do not bring safety. Participants learned that hope and love are the true remedies for fear, hate, loneliness, dis-ease, anger, blame, and guilt. God inspires us to move beyond security to live among those we are called to serve.
The NASC was augmented by honest and hopeful words, joyful singing, prayer, and laughter. Those gathered were urged to always remember that “we are
not alone.”*
To keep the ideas alive after the conference, learning circles were created so participants could connect by meetings or conference calls
and share with their churches and communities what they had learned and experienced.
The NASC and the learning circles are supported in part through The United Church of Canada’s Mission and Service Fund. Your support of the Mission and Service Fund provided people from churches across North America with a place to learn and teach one another as the body of Christ.
