Thankful Giving If you’re following the World Development and Relief 2010 calendar, this story relates to the theme for Lent Week 1: Live Thankfully. Paul and Laura Moore were lifelong members of Norwich United Church in southwestern Ontario, where they ran a successful seed company. Mr. Moore died in 2003 and Mrs. Moore in 2007. In their lifetimes they gave time and money to their congregation and to the Mission and Service Fund. They believed in the work supported through M&S—work that makes a difference in people’s lives. They believed in helping a whole community rather than funding an individual. When asked about his generosity to overseas missions, Paul said, “If I can’t go, then my money should.” The Rev. Heather McLean, Financial Development Officer for London and Hamilton Conferences, was pleased to know and work with the Moores over the years. She says, “The Moores’ gift to the work of the United Church is a wonderful affirmation of all who have been a part of their spiritual journey: Sunday school teachers; Norwich congregation and ministers; our overseas personnel; the Moores’ parents and grandparents; and their children, who understood that this bequest was important to them. Paul and Laura’s faith and generosity are being passed on to many others who will be touched by their legacy.” The Moores thought it was important to reach out and give back. They looked beyond themselves and they wanted the church to do the same. On their deaths they made a bequest to their congregation, with gifts to the Mission and Service Fund and World Development and Relief. Please follow the Moores’ example and give joyfully and thankfully to God’s mission through the Mission and Service Fund. We are a united church! This week, hold in your prayers the congregations of London Conference. © 2008 The United Church of Canada/L’Église Unie du Canada.
