Working for Others

Across the church many groups and members participate in both local and global outreach work. They are responding to our call to love and serve others.

The Men’s Ministries Network of The United Church of Canada is a group working to alleviate hardship in foreign places. They chose Angola, a country that has suffered many years of civil war. Necessary social services for the well-being of the society are neglected or in ruins. The Men’s Ministries Network decided to help by building a school at Dondi, in the south-central part of the country. The cost of the project will be close to $1 million—not an easy amount to raise in times of economic crisis. The money will be raised by individual and group pledges and through educational events at Conference annual meetings.

What makes this fundraising plan special is that the Men’s Ministries Network recognizes that a large part of our church’s response to the call to love and serve is the work done by the whole denomination through the Mission and Service Fund. They plan to give 10 percent of Dondi donations to the Mission and Service Fund. The men raising money for bricks and mortar for a new school in Angola will also be supporting United Church efforts to alleviate similar situations in other areas of the world.

Please consider the example of the Men’s Ministries Network and include M&S in your outreach programs.

We are a united church! This week, remember in your prayers of thanks
the denomination-wide groups who work for human rights and justice
around the world—groups like the Men’s Ministries Network and
the United Church Women
