Burdens
In any Chinese city you’ll see people very good at carrying burdens—a bicycle transports
a mattress; a pedal-driven cart moves a huge pile of Styrofoam to a recycling shop; a bamboo
pole carries baskets of produce to market.
Such sights made overseas personnel Mary Fraser wonder about the invisible burdens carried by her Chinese students. At first glance many seemed burden-free, but Mary discovered that, like students in the West, their inner burdens include anxiety about how to find a good job, repay school loans, make a successful marriage, and earn a lot of money for a comfortable life.
Chen Liu, a 30-year-old office worker at the university where Mary works, has a dream: to earn a doctorate degree at Tsinghua, China’s top university. It will not be easy. Entrance exams for all universities are written once a year on the same day. If Chen Liu is not accepted to the university she has chosen, she must wait a year to apply elsewhere!
Mary says, “We in the West are fortunate. Our physical burdens are less noticeable: we use enclosed vehicles, recycling trucks, and wheeled suitcases and trolleys. Sometimes bureaucracy seems less onerous than for others. For invisible burdens, all Christians need not be heavy-laden. Jesus tells us to come to him and he will ease our burdens.”
In this Easter season, we are reminded that many in the world have heavy visible and invisible burdens. Your gifts to the Mission and Service Fund help our partners address the struggles that only they can see within their own communities. Through M&S we can offer hope and relief.
We are a united church! Together we send overseas personnel
to China, Fiji, South Korea, and Japan. Remember our partners in
Asia and the Pacific this week.
