Minutes for Mission

M&S Supports Green Efforts

It was not surprising to see a satellite image of China partially obscured by a dense blanket of brown smog. The United Nations

had released a report titled “Atmospheric Brown Clouds: Regional Assessment Report with Focus on Asia.” A brownish haze, sometimes more than 1.6 kilometres thick, and clearly visible from airplanes, stretches from the Arabian Peninsula to the Yellow Sea.

It often covers Cairo, New Delhi, Tehran, Bangkok, Seoul, and Beijing. Sometimes it drifts as far as California.

The UN report identifies four causes of the smog:

  automobiles

  slash-and-burn agriculture

  wood-burning kitchen stoves

  coal-fired power plants

The smog has dramatically reduced sunlight in many Chinese cities. The UN also reports a 5 percent decline in the growth rate of rice harvests across Asia since the 1960s.

Amity, a United Church partner in China, is working to help:

building and distributing solar-powered kettles and ovens

installing bio-gas systems for cooking and for lighting sheep and cattle farms

publicizing solar-powered cooking by holding tasting competitions

Your Mission and Service Fund donations are being used to create a cleaner China and a cleaner world. M&S supports partners who are knowledgeable and passionate about caring for God’s creation.

We are a united church! Today, say a prayer for our denomination’s continuing work with partners to care for creation.
