A Penny Shared (for a young reader)

The children at Ralph Connor United Church in Canmore, Alberta, are M&S Enthusiasts!

It started when their leaders decided to teach the children about the United Church and about the Mission and Service Fund. They read M&S for Kids, Volumes 1 and 2. Each week they shared a Minute for Mission. They learned that M&S helps people all over the world.

The children at Canmore learned that kids can make a difference and also wanted to help M&S help others. “Let’s have a penny drive in December!” they decided, “to raise money and teach people about M&S.”

They decorated empty coffee cans with rainbow-coloured construction paper in the colours of the M&S logo. They liked the idea that cans would make a lot of noise when those coins dropped in. The last week in November they read a Minute for Mission in worship and told everyone about the penny drive. Together they read the “The M&S Hat” poem.* Every week until the end of December they collected coins for M&S and made a huge chart to show everyone how much they were collecting.

It was very exciting on a special Sunday in January, which they called “Rolling in the New Year.” That’s the day everyone helped roll up the coins, some by hand and some with a machine. There were so many coins that they had to get help from the adults after church. Then they celebrated their special Sunday with Sunday school ice cream sundaes!

Guess what? At the end of the penny drive, the children had collected $639.39 for M&S! They learned about sharing and helping others. They learned that kids can make a difference. And—best of all—they had fun!
