Sunday, Dec. 6^th – 11:00 am – service will be held at Ocean View United Church, Broad Cove.

Sunday, Dec. 6^th – 7:00 pm – service will be held at McDowell United Church, Western Bay.

Tuesday, Dec. 1^st – 7:30 pm – the McDowell U.C.W. will meet downstairs at McDowell United Church. This will also be the final date to bring items along for Emmanuel House for this time as we will be delivering all our items to Emmanuel House soon.

Wednesday, Dec. 2^nd – 7:30 pm – Bible Study will be held downstairs at Ocean View United Church.

Thursday, Dec. 3^rd – 7:30 pm – Music Forum will be held downstairs at McDowell United. Anyone interested are welcome to attend.

Saturday, Dec. 5^th – 9:00 am – 11:00 am – the McDowell United Church Trustee Board and U.C.W. will be having a “Breakfast with Santa”. Tickets are available from any Trustee Board or U.C.W. member at a cost of $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for children 12 years and under. Pictures with Santa will be available for a cost of $2.00 per picture. A Sale Table will be available during this time. Also, food items will be accepted for the Food Bank.

Monday, Dec.7^th – 6:00 pm - the Ocean View United Church will be holding their annual congregational Christmas potluck supper. All those who are attending are reminded to please bring along a potluck dish and a gift valued at $5.00 marked man or woman.

Thursday, Dec. 10^th – 6:00 pm – the McDowell United Church will be holding their annual congregational Christmas potluck supper. All those who are attending are reminded to please bring along a potluck dish and a gift valued at $5.00 marked man or woman.

A box is placed in the vestibule of McDowell United Church by the McDowell U.C.W. until Dec. 1^st to collect items such as house ware, toiletries, and personal items etc. for Emmanuel House. Last year this was a great success and the people at Emmanuel House were very thankful for all
the items they received. The congregation is asked to please support this worthwhile cause.

The McDowell United Church Trustee Board has a Special Fund set up to receive donations to replace the Church windows. Donations may also be made to this fund in honour of or in memory of. Please forward your donation to Mr. Berkley Sellars, Treasurer of the McDowell United Church Trustee Board. Please indicate on the envelope “Window Fund Project” and if your donation is in honour of or in memory of. The windows in the Church cost approximately $1,000.00 each to purchase and install.

To be considered a paid contributor for 2009 on the Blackhead – Western Bay Pastoral Charge, each contributor must pay a minimum of $205.00
to the Pastoral Charge budget and a minimum of $40.00 to the local
Church and Cemetery Fund.

Relief and Justice-seeking Go Together
When disasters occur, world response is quick. When the media broadcasts news of earthquakes, cyclones, and floods, we see the pictures and open our hearts and cheque books.
So it was when the tsunami hit Asia a few years ago. Money poured in from around the world, and the pressure was on to spend it quickly to alleviate suffering. You have often heard us say in the United Church that through partners we are interested in longer term development. Here is a post-tsunami story that helps explain what that means.
CASA is the acronym for Church’s Auxiliary for Social Change. It is an organization in India that is as old as independent India itself. We work with CASA as they continue post-tsunami rebuilding and look for ways to create positive social outcomes from the crisis. Sushsant Agrawal is the director, and he explains, “The needs of the fishing community were met quickly with new boats. That is an easy thing to do. Most of the tsunami relief efforts have concentrated on giving.” He goes on: “CASA took a step back to see what was really needed. CASA stays with the community instead of just giving and leaving.”
Here are some examples of the work that M&S gifts participate in through CASA. The lower castes in India were just as affected by the tsunami but are less likely to be helped. CASA went to the labourers who clean the boats and traditionally have few rights. CASA helped them develop 186 partnerships of four people each to purchase their own boats. This is a step forward in challenging an unjust social structure, allowing these people to have far better lives. CASA also focuses on women and widows, who tend to be more open to new ideas. CASA is helping them create new ways of earning a living that do not depend entirely on the ocean.
