Hymn Vote-a-Thon for M&S (for two readers)
One: Across the church, congregations give regularly each Sunday to the Mission and Service Fund. But every now and then someone comes up with a creative idea for an extra fundraising effort for M&S. Here’s a great example from Kensington United Church, Prince Edward Island.
Two: (in a “sales pitch” tone) Step right up. Take out your election frustrations here! Are you dying to stuff a ballot box? Want to buy a vote? Well, now you can do both in our Favourite Hymn Vote-a-Thon. It’s perfectly legal because it’s sponsored by the board and it supports the Mission and Service Fund. For the next month you can buy ballots for $1.00 each to vote for your favourite hymn from Voices United or More Voices (add other hymn books if agreed to by your music director.) At our following worship service, we will sing with energy and enthusiasm the top five hymns. We’ll publish a running tally so you can decide whether you need to buy more votes to get you favourite hymn into the top five. As a special offer for those who are really into ballot box stuffing, we will allow you to purchase 15 ballots for only $10—that’s five free ballots.
One: When the fundraiser was completed, the congregation donated $988 to the Mission and Service Fund. On the appointed Sunday, they celebrated by singing the five hymns that had received the most votes. Other hymns that also received a lot of votes were put on a list and featured during regular services for the next few months.
Two: Want to know the winners? “Jesus You Have Come to the Lakeshore”; “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory”; “For the Beauty of the Earth”; “I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry”; and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” By participating in the Vote-a-Thon, Kensington United Church built community and got a good start on reaching their M&S goal.
Both: Here’s to raising voices and funds for the work of the church!
