Bad Rap (a Minute for two readers, especially for youth)*
One comes out with cap on sideways and a boom-box playing rap music.
Two: Whoa! What are you doing?
One: I thought you said we were going to do some rap for Mission and Service at church this morning.
Two: No way. I said we were going to talk about M&S getting a bad rap.
One: Well, that’s a relief. I’ve really been having trouble with these lyrics. What kind of bad rap do you mean?
Two: Some people say all that M&S money is spent keeping the General Council office open.
One: Ouch! That is a bad rap! But you know, almost 50 percent of the money received goes immediately out in grants to overseas partners, to congregations and Canadian community ministries, to education centres, and to theological schools to support some of their ongoing programs. It is never enough, but it represents about $14 million in those areas alone.
Two: Another thing people believe is that a few at head office in Toronto make all the decisions about spending money.
One: Well, that’s just not so. Across the church, the members themselves make decisions about what our work will be, and volunteer committees make spending decisions. In fact, the local outreach grants are distributed by Conference committees. The United Church is a justice church. Our work with global partners and Canadian partners is about seeking justice and loving and serving others.
Two: There’s always the question of wasteful spending.
One: It’s important to be wise stewards of M&S gifts. Our costs are much lower than other organizations because we have so many wonderful United Church volunteers. We also work in partnership with local organizations that already have the infrastructure in place to deliver our gifts.
Two: When we give to M&S, we are really giving to the whole church, aren’t we? We, the members, give together and put the money to work together. A United Fund for a United Vision.
One: (in a chanting “rap” voice) Don’cha kno; don’cha see: M&S is you and me.
Two: Okay, you can stop there. I feel some really bad rap coming on. Thanks, my friend, for helping me dispel M&S’s “bad rap.”
