The McDowell United Church Trustee Board has set up a Special Fund to receive donations to replace the Church windows. Donations may also be made to this fund in honour of or in memory of. Please forward your donation to Mr. Berkley Sellars, Treasurer of McDowell United Church Trustee Board. Please indicate on the envelope “Window Fund Project” and if your donation is in honour of or in memory of.
The McDowell United Church Trustee Board is in the process of replacing the windows in the Church. A Window Fund has been set up and as a result the two windows for the front of the Church should be installed later this winter or early spring. The other windows in the Church will cost approximately $1000.00 each to purchase and install. We are continuing to raise money and look for support to get these in place. If anyone is interested in donating a window in Memorial or in Honour please contact any member of the Trustee Board.

Building Community in a Challenging Place (a reading for up to 5 voices)
One: Location, location, location—it’s not just in selling a house that location counts. Hear how location can affect residents of a public housing complex:
Man’s voice: When potential employers find out where I live, all of a sudden the job is no longer available….
Woman’s voice: When I went to the school to register my children, they asked me who my Children’s Aid worker was. I don’t have a Children’s Aid worker! I may be poor—but I am a good mother.
Young adult voice: I work long hours and still can’t make ends meet. Minimum wage isn’t enough to live on.
Mom’s voice: I was late getting some papers into Employment Insurance, and now they are holding my cheque until next month. I have no money and little food for my children. I stopped taking my depression medication three weeks ago because I couldn’t afford it. I can’t wait until things get better.”
One: The Southdale Chaplaincy receives funding from the Mission and Service Fund. The chaplaincy has worked in the midst of the largest low-income public housing complex for families in the city of London, Ontario, for 18 years, providing a Christian presence in this diverse community. The chaplaincy provides crisis support and advocacy for residents who face many challenges. Many are lone parents; many struggle to recover from addictions; all of the families struggle to make ends meet.
Man’s voice: Many of the adults and children who live at the complex face stigmatization in the workforce, school system, and from other institutions or authorities.
Woman’s voice: The chaplaincy provides after-school programs for children of the complex, complete with a hot meal brought by supper volunteers. Last summer, over 50 children were sponsored to attend church camps and day camps in the region.
Young adult voice: The chaplaincy provides a Christmas party for the residents of the complex with a meal and gifts. It also provides Christmas hampers for families.
Mom’s voice: The ministry of the Southdale Chaplaincy faces issues of social justice, poverty, and brokenness every day. Every day, the chaplaincy responds with love, prayer, hope, and actions to build justice and community in the neighbourhood.
Together: With the support of the Mission and Service Fund and your prayers, Southdale Chaplaincy can continue its work in the midst of a challenging place.
