M&S Is Good for Health

Did you know that your gifts to the Mission and Service Fund work for healthcare in many parts of the world? In Canada, there are four hospitals/healthcare centres that operate under the banner of the United Church: Lamont Centre in Lamont, Alberta; Bella Coola Hospital in Bella Coola, British Columbia; R.W. Large Memorial Hospital (Bella Bella) in Walisla, British Columbia; and Wrinch Memorial Hospital in Hazelton, British Columbia.

The hospitals are funded by the provincial health services for the bulk of their costs. The United Church still makes grants for particular programs, and that money comes from the M&S Fund. These programs include continuing education for nurses, maintenance of residences for staff, and special programs to help immigrant doctors become certified for practice in Canada with the help of mentors and supervisors.

People in the rural communities where the hospitals are located value the presence of these local health services and the church’s willingness to continue providing quality care in remote places. The general government tendency to regionalize and centralize larger facilities in fewer places has resulted in less availability of care. Pregnant moms often have to go out of the local community and away from family to a regional hospital. These small hospitals provide effective and efficient care for which local residents are very grateful.

The Mission & Service Fund was instrumental in initiating these ministries and continues to support aspects of the work. M&S allows us to live out our commitment to God’s gift of health in western Canada and in many places around the world.
