Living Faithfully

The Caribbean coast of Nicaragua has been hit hard in recent years by natural disasters such as flooding and hurricanes. There is very little work available for people living on the Caribbean coast. Fishing, shrimping, and lobster fishing—traditional occupations—are less and less successful. Several large companies take huge catches, leaving the dory fishers little. Prices have risen dramatically, because food supplies like rice, yucca, plantain, and beans were destroyed in the flooding and hurricanes. The average income per household is now less than $100 per month. Inflation is also causing a great deal of suffering.

In order to provide for their families, many of the young adults go to work on cruise ships, leaving their homes for eight months and returning for a two-month leave. Children are being raised by grandmothers while the parents are away. You can imagine the problems that this raises in families!

The church plays an important role in the lives of these families through sports programs and fellowship programs, as well as worship services. There is a shortage of ordained ministers; many have moved to other ministries or now live in the United States, where they moved to during the Contra War.

Cathyann and Peter Hoyle are United Church overseas personnel in Bluefields, Nicaragua, serving the Moravian Church Creole Congregation. Your Mission and Service Fund gifts support the work of Cathyann and Peter as they serve young people as well as grandparents struggling to live faithfully in difficult economic times.
