Sometimes they simply need a hand to help them move on. A man in his mid-40s had been coming to Bridges to Hope to receive a food hamper for many years. Bridges to Hope is a food aid centre in St. John’s, Newfoundland, that receives funding from the Mission and Service Fund. However, the centre does more than just offer food. When staff asked the man who had been coming to the centre for food donations if he thought he would like to work, he became very excited. He said, “I’d give anything to get a job and get off of social assistance.” Together with staff help, he wrote a good résumé and took it to several stores and businesses in the city. Each time he came back to Bridges to Hope, he would report how things were going. Finally, one day, he arrived ecstatic with the news that he’d been offered two jobs. One was with a supermarket and one with a church. Though he was thrilled, there was a hitch. Each one asked him to provide a letter from his doctor stating that he was well and physically able to do a certain amount of lifting. His doctor wouldn’t do it. It was only then that he told staff about a hit-and-run accident that happened 15 years ago. That’s why he hadn’t been able to work. Although he had been given a cheque for $1,100 in compensation, he had not signed any papers. Staff at Bridges to Hope made an appointment for him with a lawyer. After a court hearing, this man won his case. He was awarded a generous allowance each month, as well as the retroactive money for 15 years. This individual will be eternally grateful to Bridges to Hope for turning his life around and to your gifts to Mission and Service for helping to make it happen. © 2008 The United Church of Canada/L’Église Unie du Canada.
