Overcoming Growing PainsTwenty years ago, Northwest Barrie United Church sprang to life in a barren corner of Barrie, Ontario. It grew from a handful of devoted families to a small, tight-knit congregation that knew they were exactly where they wanted to be. Then it faltered as growing pains set in. Making the leap to a large, organized congregation was not easy. Several ministers did their best to move the congregation forward; the people themselves poured their hearts and souls into the church. But somehow it was never quite enough. Thankfully, during this challenging period, the United Church and you, were there. Through the Mission and Service Fund, Northwest received the assistance it needed to keep going and growing. A transitional minister helped Northwest get its infrastructure in place ready for the next move and the arrival of a new minister. Today Northwest is indeed growing. For the first time in years, new faces and full pews are the norm instead of the exception. The church offers Sunday school and nursery programs, an active youth group, junior and senior choirs and a youth ensemble, and a group for moms. Northwest, in turn, supports organizations such as the local homeless shelter, street youth programs, and the city’s Out of the Cold program. Your Mission and Service dollars helped Northwest find its footing again. And the people of that congregation—people of faith just like you—are grateful for your support. © 2008 The United Church of Canada/L’Église Unie du Canada.
