July 26, 2009Wonders of Manitoba and Northwestern OntarioIn the year between annual meetings, people from all over the Conference of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario submitted photographs of things or people that they considered to be “wonders.” Some wonders had great beauty, others inspired awe. Others were nominated because they represented the spirit of communities, their dedication to the gospel, and commitment to the Mission and Service Fund. A number were of people in whom the photographers sensed something of the holy. During the month leading up to the 2008 Conference Annual Meeting and during the meeting itself, people voted for those they considered to be the most wonderful wonders. They were willing to contribute $5.00 to M&S each time they voted. The Conference raised over $4,400 for the Mission and Service Fund using this charitable strategy. So what was the winning wonder in the conference? The submission with the most votes was of a thrift shop operated by a United Church in Hamiota, a small town in rural Manitoba. What was so wonderful about this little shop? Since 1977, the thrift shop has donated $181,000 to charities—church-related, local, provincial, and worldwide. Over the years, the Mission & Service Fund has received $68,000 from the proceeds of the thrift shop. What a wonder—not just for the Conference of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario, but for the Mission & Service Fund! © 2008 The United Church of Canada/L’Église Unie du Canada.
