Building Relationships

Last year, over 100 people from Manitou Conference gathered for their biennial event, “Neighbours Praising God,” at Camp Bickell, overlooking a quiet lake. It was an opportunity for worship, study, recreation, and spiritual renewal. At Camp Bickell there was a Sacred Fire, lit and watched over by two Aboriginal fire keepers. During the fire-lighting ceremony, at a Sunday morning sunrise service, and at the closing ceremony, the fire keepers told stories from their tradition and shared the pain of residential school experiences.

During one ceremony to extinguish the fire, an amazing thing happened. A large bald eagle flew overhead, much lower than an eagle usually flies in the presence of humans. One of the fire keepers reminded us that the eagle is a sign of the presence of the Spirit. As quickly as the eagle arrived, it flew on its way, disappearing into the horizon, having brought the thrilling message of God’s blessing upon us.

Developing right relations with First Nations peoples is a priority of the United Church. Many Aboriginal congregations receive grants from the Mission and Service Fund to support their ministry. Your gifts to the Mission and Service Fund support national and Conference work and the development of resources and events, which help build caring communities for worship, education, and active witness. Through your gifts to the Mission and Service Fund, the Spirit is present in many places.
