August 2, 2009Building on StrengthsMission and Service Fund that walks in solidarity with this culturally diverse, low-income community, seeking to address problems in ways that honour the strengths and assets of the community. Although issues of poverty affect the residents in the general area of Jane and Finch, the community is blessed with cultural riches: 110 different nationalities are represented and over 70 languages and dialects are spoken. The role of the Jane-Finch Community Ministry is to provide community development and community organizing support, offer pastoral care, and be involved in advocacy. The ministry has taken an active role in working with other networks and projects, including programs for youth and food access. Last summer, with financial and moral support from the Jane-Finch Community ministry, the Firgrove Tenant’s Association organized a back-to-school drive in which 167 backpacks with school supplies were given out to youth and children. In conjunction with these networks and in partnership with community residents, the ministry continues to make a difference. Your M&S gifts, along with dedicated community residents and other organizations, support the efforts of the Jane-Finch Community Ministry to make a difference in this diverse Toronto neighbourhood. © 2008 The United Church of Canada/L’Église Unie du Canada.
